Painful, unsightly, and embarrassing - that’s the fungal toenail infection. People who suffer from it often feel self-conscious to the point of avoiding sandals, flip-flops, and any other open-toed shoes or going barefoot in public. What is nail fungus, and how can we prevent and treat it? First of all, let’s define fungal toenail infection, also known as onychomycosis. It occurs when a fungus penetrates the nail bed and infects the nail plate, causing thickening, discoloration, and deformation of the nail. You may notice that your toenail turns yellow, brown, or white, or that it lifts off the nail bed and becomes brittle and crumbly. How do we get nail fungus? It can develop from various sources, such as walking barefoot in damp communal areas (like locker rooms, showers, and pools), wearing tight shoes that don’t allow your feet to breathe, or having a weakened immune system, poor circulation, or diabetes. Fingernail fungus is less common, but it can occur if you expose your hands to the same conditions as your feet or if you bite your nails. If you suspect that you have a fungal toenail infection, don’t ignore it or hope it will go away on its own. Unfortunately, nail fungus is stubborn and contagious, and if left untreated, it can spread to your other nails or even to other people. There are several over-the-counter antifungal treatments available, such as topical creams, sprays, and nail lacquers, which you can apply directly to the affected area. However, they may take months to work, and not all of them are effective for all types of nail fungus. If you have a severe or recurring infection, or if you don’t see any improvement after trying OTC remedies, you should consult a podiatrist or a dermatologist. They may prescribe a stronger medication, such as oral antifungal pills, which work from the inside out, or laser therapy, which kills the fungus without damaging the nail. But prevention is always better than cure. Here are some tips to keep your feet (and hands) fungus-free: - Wash and dry your feet (and hands) thoroughly, especially between your toes (and fingers). - Wear clean socks (and gloves) made of breathable materials, such as cotton or wool, and change them daily. - Avoid sharing towels, shoes, socks, and nail clippers with others, or disinfect them before use. - Choose shoes that fit well and have enough room for your toes to move, and alternate them every other day to allow them to air out. - Use antifungal powders or sprays on your feet (and inside your shoes) if you have sweaty or smelly feet. - Keep your nails trimmed and clean, and don’t use artificial nails or nail polish if you have a fungal infection. With these precautions, you can enjoy healthy and beautiful nails all year round. Don’t let nail fungus ruin your confidence or your summer fun!
